Sélestat: Best Area for Budget Travelers

We might consider Sélestat to be the best area for budget travelers thanks to its cheap hotel and rental options, but it’s also a great stop to make on your journey through Alsace.

Just 35 minutes from Strasbourg, this medieval and historic city is just about halfway to Colmar.

Take the bridge over the River Ill to get some great photos and make your way into the old town. The historic center consists of two churches, one gothic and one romanesque style,  along with the clock tower and many more historical buildings.

Just a few minutes away from Sélestat is the Château du Haut Koenigsbourg, one of the most famous castles in the country and even Europe.

This 12th Century medieval castle has been very well preserved and can be toured, plus offers expansive views over Sélestat and the Rhine Valley.

Colmar: Best Area for Luxury Travelers

Colmar is the next best-known destination in Alsace after Strasbourg. Located less than an hour from Strasbourg by car and even less by train, it is a city not to be missed and not just for luxury travelers.

Visitors love Colmar for the half-timbered houses around its historic center, its quiet canals, and its friendly locals.

I describe it to people as similar to Strasbourg but on a smaller scale and more village-like atmosphere. Colmar can be a great day trip from elsewhere in the region, or your base while there.

Colmar also hosts an exceptional Christmas Market every December which basically overtakes the entire historical center.

The smells of gingerbread and hot wine fill the streets, lights and decorations cover the buildings, and you’ll immediately notice the local tradition of hanging teddy bears on the outside of windows.

When it’s not the festive season, there is still plenty to do in Colmar.

A favorite neighborhood for photographs and wandering is La Petite Venise (or Little Venice). It’s a bit of a more upscale spot, as the surroundings will remind you of the canals of Venice; except with half-timbered houses and no gondolas!

Also worth a visit is the local covered market and one or more of the many museums you’ll find throughout Colmar. In the center of it all, you’ll find the Collégiale St-Martin – a magnificent gothic cathedral that towers over the town.

But it’s a centrally located place for those who want to tour the Alsace Route des Vins, or the Alsatian wine route.

The Route des Vins is a north-to-south route through the Alsace wine country dotted with vineyards and their villages. It is a wonderful tour of an important part of French culture that will also show you some of the most picturesque villages of the Alsace region.

Ribeauvillé sits right in the middle of the route and is also a historic Alsatian town. Especially during spring and summertime, the village is covered in flowers and plants earning it a four-star rating in the French “Ville-Fleuri” system for “flowered towns”. 

Ribbeauvillé is a medieval town that celebrates its historical heritage with several festivals throughout the year such as the Fiddler’s Festival and Old Music Festival, both in September, the Kougelhopf Festival in May celebrating a traditional cake, and of course its famous medieval Christmas market in December.

Therefore, Ribbeauvillé is an excellent destination of choice whether you want to do some wine tasting or simply enjoy the culture. Families and travelers looking for a safer feeling, in general, will appreciate this village.

Mulhouse: Best Area for Families

For families who don’t exactly need to be on the wine route of Alsace or who want to see something besides it, Mulhouse would be a good choice. Along with Strasbourg, it’s another of the major cities in the Alsace region, though still not a massive one.

Mulhouse is located in the south of Alsace, not far from the German and Swiss borders and just outside of the Vosges Mountains. It is therefore a very international city with easy access across two borders. 

There is plenty to do in Mulhouse, and as usual, it is best to start in the historic city center, with its narrow streets and beautiful Alsatian architecture.

Two museums that are unique to the town are the National Automobile Museum Schlumpf Collection and the Cité du Train Railway Museum.

You can even tour a little piece of a traditional Alsatian village right there in the city at the Ecomusée d’Alsace, which is an open-air exhibit of historical buildings typical to the region that a group of residents is dedicated to saving and preserving.

It’s perfect for families who would have a harder time making it to some of the more distant villages.

Many travelers, myself included, love to enjoy the history and culture of the places we visit. And while you can (and should) do so in any of the areas on this list, we’ve chosen Molsheim to single out.

Molsheim is a very small village a bit west of Strasbourg. It is also on the Alsace wine route, which immediately helps it tick the box for local culture as a wine village. Just driving into or out of the village center will immediately surround you with miles of Alsace vineyards.

The village is full of history. The Place de l’Hôtel de Ville is the main town center, along with the Place du Marché a few minutes away.

La Metzig is an important historical building to see as a 16th-century butcher’s guild house. The ground floor is now an Alsatian regional cuisine restaurant.

You’ll also find an abundance of churches and cathedrals around Molsheim, many of them from the Jesuits and hundreds of years old.

To take in the history and culture of Molsheim that you came for, visit the Chartreuse Museum and Bugatti Foundation to really understand the city’s story.

Thann is one of the last stops on the wine route of Alsace, located in the southern part of the region west of Mulhouse and in the Vosges Mountains. It’s another small village with a quaint feeling, but also a great base for adventurers.

Situated along the Thur, Thann’s historical center is full of 16th-century buildings, towers, and fortifications.

But just a short distance away are the beginnings of hikes to castles, ruins, and viewpoints over the Vosges Mountains and Alsatian Plain. 

The Château de l’Engelbourg is within walking distance of the city center itself. Heading a bit further into the Vosges brings countless opportunities for hiking trails to waterfalls, lakes, and expansive views of the region’s nature. That is why Thann could be a great place to start for those looking for an adventure.
