Where to Stay in Alsace, France: 7 Best Towns & Areas

The region of Alsace in eastern France is a favorite for culture explorers, wine lovers, and especially holiday season travelers. While well-known destinations in France like Paris and the Côte d’Azur are always spectacular, Alsace is a place not to overlook when planning your trip to France.

Alsace is very large, however, and there are plenty of towns and areas to choose from.

The main hub of the region is the city of Strasbourg, which is the best place for travelers who want to be centrally located and experience the history and culture of the Grand East. But there are countless other fun areas to stay in Alsace such as Colmar, Mulhouse, and more.

Here, we’ll discuss where to stay in Alsace and the best towns and areas to visit on your trip. There really is something for everyone here, so read on to find out which parts are for you.

TL;DR Our Favorite Accommodation in Alsace, France

Looking for the best places to stay in Alsace based on your travel needs? Here’s what you need to know.

TL;DR Areas To Choose Within Alsace, France

Alsace is a large region in the easternmost part of France bordering a long stretch of Germany as well as a bit of Switzerland. You’ll notice that the names of places in this region are very German-sounding, and the architecture and cuisine reflect that cultural closeness as well.

Strasbourg is a good all-around area to find the best accommodation in Alsace if you aren’t sure where to stay, but the fun goes way beyond the Grand-Île there. We’ve put together some suggestions for different types of travelers who find their way to Alsace.

Strasbourg: Best Area for First-Timers/Tourists & Best All-Around Area

Strasbourg Cathedral during Sunset

Strasbourg is the region’s capital and its largest city, but don’t worry – it is not a concrete jungle like Paris or Marseille. It is a beautiful city centered around the Grand-Île of Strasbourg (the Grand Island) which sits on small tributaries of the Rhine, with Germany just on the other side.

The canals throughout and the half-timbered houses that rise above them make for exceptional photographs and views to admire.

The Strasbourg city center is home to the world-famous Strasbourg Christmas Market for those who wish to visit in December. But you can enjoy the city year-round thanks to numerous sights to see, such as the picturesque neighborhood of La Petite France (little France) or the incredible Strasbourg Cathedral, among many others.

Thanks to its wide range of accommodation options and proximity to the Strasbourg International Airport, this is a great location to stay in Alsace if you are looking for plenty to do plus easy access to transport to the surrounding countryside and beyond.

In fact, Strasbourg could be named as the best place to stay for many types of travelers: adventure-seekers, food-lovers, luxury vacationers…and that’s why we’d consider it the best all-around place to stay in the Alsace region. Here are just a few of the things to do around town:

Sélestat: Best Area for Budget Travelers

We might consider Sélestat to be the best area for budget travelers thanks to its cheap hotel and rental options, but it’s also a great stop to make on your journey through Alsace.

Just 35 minutes from Strasbourg, this medieval and historic city is just about halfway to Colmar.

Take the bridge over the River Ill to get some great photos and make your way into the old town. The historic center consists of two churches, one gothic and one romanesque style,  along with the clock tower and many more historical buildings.

Just a few minutes away from Sélestat is the Château du Haut Koenigsbourg, one of the most famous castles in the country and even Europe.

This 12th Century medieval castle has been very well preserved and can be toured, plus offers expansive views over Sélestat and the Rhine Valley.

Sélestat is home to many budget accommodation options and offers cheaper hotels in general thanks to its lower profile than nearby Strasbourg and Colmar, making it a great place for budget travelers.

With easy access to the other main destinations of the region and the famous Route des Vins, it is ideally located as well.

Here are some of the top attractions in Sélestat:

  • Admire the churches of Sainte-Foy and Saint-Georges
  • Visit an interesting museum dedicated to bread, the Maison du Pain d’Alsace
  • Taste a real French crêpe at Crêp’ôz
  • Get some fresh air at the Parc des Remparts, where there’s even a public indoor swimming pool
  • Bring the kids to Cigoland amusement park for some rides and fun

Colmar: Best Area for Luxury Travelers

Colmar is the next best-known destination in Alsace after Strasbourg. Located less than an hour from Strasbourg by car and even less by train, it is a city not to be missed and not just for luxury travelers.

Visitors love Colmar for the half-timbered houses around its historic center, its quiet canals, and its friendly locals.

I describe it to people as similar to Strasbourg but on a smaller scale and more village-like atmosphere. Colmar can be a great day trip from elsewhere in the region, or your base while there.

Colmar also hosts an exceptional Christmas Market every December which basically overtakes the entire historical center.

The smells of gingerbread and hot wine fill the streets, lights and decorations cover the buildings, and you’ll immediately notice the local tradition of hanging teddy bears on the outside of windows.

When it’s not the festive season, there is still plenty to do in Colmar.

A favorite neighborhood for photographs and wandering is La Petite Venise (or Little Venice). It’s a bit of a more upscale spot, as the surroundings will remind you of the canals of Venice; except with half-timbered houses and no gondolas!

Also worth a visit is the local covered market and one or more of the many museums you’ll find throughout Colmar. In the center of it all, you’ll find the Collégiale St-Martin – a magnificent gothic cathedral that towers over the town.

Here are a few of our top tips when visiting Colmar:

Ribeauvillé: Best Area for Safety

We’ve chosen Ribeauvillé (pronounced Ree-bow-vee-yay) as the best area for safety due to its small village atmosphere and location in the countryside.

But it’s a centrally located place for those who want to tour the Alsace Route des Vins, or the Alsatian wine route.

The Route des Vins is a north-to-south route through the Alsace wine country dotted with vineyards and their villages. It is a wonderful tour of an important part of French culture that will also show you some of the most picturesque villages of the Alsace region.

Ribeauvillé sits right in the middle of the route and is also a historic Alsatian town. Especially during spring and summertime, the village is covered in flowers and plants earning it a four-star rating in the French “Ville-Fleuri” system for “flowered towns”.

Ribbeauvillé is a medieval town that celebrates its historical heritage with several festivals throughout the year such as the Fiddler’s Festival and Old Music Festival, both in September, the Kougelhopf Festival in May celebrating a traditional cake, and of course its famous medieval Christmas market in December.

Therefore, Ribbeauvillé is an excellent destination of choice whether you want to do some wine tasting or simply enjoy the culture. Families and travelers looking for a safer feeling, in general, will appreciate this village.

We’d recommend a few things during your time in Ribeauvillé:

Mulhouse: Best Area for Families

For families who don’t exactly need to be on the wine route of Alsace or who want to see something besides it, Mulhouse would be a good choice. Along with Strasbourg, it’s another of the major cities in the Alsace region, though still not a massive one.

Mulhouse is located in the south of Alsace, not far from the German and Swiss borders and just outside of the Vosges Mountains. It is therefore a very international city with easy access across two borders.

There is plenty to do in Mulhouse, and as usual, it is best to start in the historic city center, with its narrow streets and beautiful Alsatian architecture.

Two museums that are unique to the town are the National Automobile Museum Schlumpf Collection and the Cité du Train Railway Museum.

You can even tour a little piece of a traditional Alsatian village right there in the city at the Ecomusée d’Alsace, which is an open-air exhibit of historical buildings typical to the region that a group of residents is dedicated to saving and preserving.

It’s perfect for families who would have a harder time making it to some of the more distant villages.

All of this plus much more makes Mulhouse a great place for the whole family to enjoy- after all, who doesn’t love classic cars, trains, and easy access to traditional sights? Here are some of the top things to hit in Mulhouse:

Molsheim: Best Area for Culture/History

Many travelers, myself included, love to enjoy the history and culture of the places we visit. And while you can (and should) do so in any of the areas on this list, we’ve chosen Molsheim to single out.

Molsheim is a very small village a bit west of Strasbourg. It is also on the Alsace wine route, which immediately helps it tick the box for local culture as a wine village. Just driving into or out of the village center will immediately surround you with miles of Alsace vineyards.

The village is full of history. The Place de l’Hôtel de Ville is the main town center, along with the Place du Marché a few minutes away.

La Metzig is an important historical building to see as a 16th-century butcher’s guild house. The ground floor is now an Alsatian regional cuisine restaurant.

You’ll also find an abundance of churches and cathedrals around Molsheim, many of them from the Jesuits and hundreds of years old.

To take in the history and culture of Molsheim that you came for, visit the Chartreuse Museum and Bugatti Foundation to really understand the city’s story.

As you can see, there is plenty to do in Molsheim despite its small size. Here are a few top picks:

Thann: Best Area for Adventures

Last on our list but certainly not least, Thann is a village considered to be one of “the most beautiful detours of France”. We’d have to agree, and name it as the best spot for adventures in Alsace as well.

Thann is one of the last stops on the wine route of Alsace, located in the southern part of the region west of Mulhouse and in the Vosges Mountains. It’s another small village with a quaint feeling, but also a great base for adventurers.

Situated along the Thur, Thann’s historical center is full of 16th-century buildings, towers, and fortifications.

But just a short distance away are the beginnings of hikes to castles, ruins, and viewpoints over the Vosges Mountains and Alsatian Plain.

The Château de l’Engelbourg is within walking distance of the city center itself. Heading a bit further into the Vosges brings countless opportunities for hiking trails to waterfalls, lakes, and expansive views of the region’s nature. That is why Thann could be a great place to start for those looking for an adventure.

Some top things to do in and around Thann are as follows:

  • Visit the South Gate of the Wine Route of Alsace, a museum to start or end the wine road at
  • Hike the Sentier Viticole de Thann for some views of the village
  • Get some real croissants and other French pastries at one of the many authentic Pâtisseries in town
  • Take in the view from one of the bridges over the Thur
  • Make your way further into the Vosges Mountains and have an adventure

Getting Around Alsace, France

Transportation around the Alsace region is not difficult. Whatever your budget and comfort level, you should be able to move between places relatively easily.

Arriving from Elsewhere

To get to Alsace, you can fly into the Strasbourg International Airport or the Mulhouse-Basel-Freiburg EuroAirport. Air France as well as many other European carriers serve the airports from major cities around the continent.

Long-distance and regional trains also arrive from elsewhere in France, Luxembourg, Germany, and Switzerland. You can use websites like Omio to see what trains are running and when.

Getting Around by Train

The French train system is the SNCF, which operates trains quite frequently from hubs in Strasbourg and Mulhouse. Even the smaller villages on this list have stations (though might be served less frequently). Solo travelers and budget travelers will find the train to be cheap and effective.

Train tickets just around the region do not need to be reserved in advance and are the same price no matter when you buy them. Use the app oui.sncf to see timing and purchase your ticket directly.

Getting Around on the Roads

The road system in Alsace is just as good as the rest of France, and driving here isn’t a problem for most tourists. Self-driving is a great way to save money and stress for families. It can be a great way to see everything on your own time and go further than the main places.

Rental agencies can be found at the airports of Strasbourg and Mulhouse, as well as their city centers. I like to rent from Sixt in Europe, but you can always use sites like Kayak or Skyscanner to see who is offering the best deal during your stay.

FAQ

Where is a good place to stay in Alsace near the Wine Route?

You could stay in Strasbourg or Colmar and make your way to the villages of the Route des Vins. But, to really experience this amazing path of vineyards, stay in a village, like Molsheim, Ribeauvillé, or Thann.

What is the best area to stay in Strasbourg?

While the Grand Île as a whole is a great place to stay, I recommend the La Petite France neighborhood for its picturesque beauty and its easy access to the rest of the sights of Strasbourg.

What are the best neighborhoods to stay in Colmar?

Colmar is rather small in general so most locations will be fine, but for the best time, I recommend anywhere in the historical center (Vieux Colmar) and particularly Little Venice.
