Once a part of Mexico, Vista was originally comprised of three ranchos that were formed from a Mexican land grant, including Rancho Buena Vista and Rancho Guajome. 1. Rancho Buena Vista Adobe

Rancho Buena Vista was one of the famous land-grant ranchos originally issued by Mexico to some of its citizens. It was awarded to Felipe Subria by Mexican Governor Pio Pico in 1845.
Subria built a single-story adobe on the land, as well as a small barn. In 1852, the new owner, Jesus Machedo, added to the adobe by constructing several rooms that are still part of the Rancho Buena Vista Adobe structure today.
Visitors to the Rancho Buena Vista Adobe can enjoy the lovely grounds, a tour of the adobe with its many historic artifacts, a unique gift shop, and a beautiful art gallery. Docents give hands-on history lessons about early ranch life and provide details about the 4,000 historical items in the collection.

2. Rancho Guajome Adobe

Rancho Guajome was another beautiful land-grant rancho from the mid-1800s. It was issued to Andres and Jose Manuel by Governor Pio Pico in 1845. Though the rancho quickly changed hands, the lovely 7,000-square-foot, 28-room adobe was built just a few years later.
Even though the Rancho Guajome Adobe is considered a late model of rancho-style architecture, its Spanish-Mexican colonial design remains well-preserved and is an excellent example of life during the days of the ranchos. The Rancho Guajome Adobe is now a National Historic Landmark, a California Historical Landmark, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Rancho Guajome Adobe is located in the lovely Rancho Guajome Adobe County Park and features a gift shop, museum, and adobe house tours. The park also offers opportunities for horseback riding, hiking, biking, and wildlife viewing.

3. The Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum

The Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum is a living history museum that offers a unique opportunity to learn about the equipment used in farming, building, mining, transportation, and production in the early 1900s. Many of the museum pieces are still functional, and guests can see them in action during the museum’s bi-annual events. The Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum is also home to several specialty exhibits and classes, as well as the American Craft Weekend. At the Blacksmith Barn, visitors can watch as a trained blacksmith goes over the details of the trade.
Individuals can also sign up for blacksmithing classes where they can learn the skills required for tool making and ironwork. At the Weavers Barn, members of the Palomar Handweavers Guild provide demonstrations of original methods of cloth making, while the West Coast Clock & Watch Exhibit provides some beautiful examples of antique clocks and watches.

Bakers and food artisans sell everything from pies to salsa, while local artists offer jewelry, soaps, dog treats, and a host of other specialty items.
The Vista Farmers Market also offers visitors smaller markets such as the Certified Farmers Market, the Worlds Fare, the Artisans Marketplace, and the Gardeners Market. It is open every Saturday year-round, regardless of the weather, from 8:00 am until noon and is located at the San Diego County Courthouse.
